The Law Office of Keisha Smith

Dedicated. Experienced. Here for You.

For more than 25 years, I’ve stood beside individuals and families navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I know what it’s like to face uncertainty in the courtroom, to feel like the system is stacked against you, and to wonder who you can trust. My role, my calling, is to be that trusted advocate who brings calm, strategy, and strength to your corner when everything feels overwhelming.

I began my legal career as a prosecutor, where I learned firsthand how the criminal justice system works from the inside out. That experience has shaped the way I defend my clients today. I don’t just see a charge or a file number, I see a person whose life, reputation, and future are on the line. Over the years, I’ve represented countless clients in criminal cases ranging from misdemeanor theft to capital murder, as well as parents and juveniles facing life-altering legal challenges.

Since 2007, I’ve worked for myself, first as a partner at Owmby & Smith, and now through my own practice based in Houston, Texas. My firm is intentionally small because I believe in giving every client the attention and dedication they deserve. When you hire me, you work directly with me—not an assistant, not a rotating list of associates. You get my full focus, my experience, and my commitment from the first consultation to the final resolution.

A Modern, Personalized Approach

Although I’ve spent decades in the courtroom, my firm operates virtually to meet the needs of today’s clients. I offer fully remote services throughout Harris County and surrounding areas, allowing clients to meet with me from the comfort of their homes. I also meet in person upon request. My goal is to make legal help more accessible, because justice shouldn’t be limited by geography or convenience.

My clients come to me because they know they’ll be heard. I take on a limited number of cases intentionally so that I can dedicate my time to those who truly need my help. Whether we’re discussing a criminal defense strategy, a family law issue, or a juvenile case, you’ll find that my approach is patient, honest, and compassionate. I’m not here to judge; I’m here to guide you toward the best possible outcome.

FAQs

Have questions before getting started? You’re not alone, many clients reach out with similar concerns when facing legal challenges. Below are some of the most common questions we receive, designed to help you understand how we work and how we can help you move forward with confidence.

  • 1. Do you meet with clients in person, or is your practice fully remote?

Absolutely, I work primarily as a virtual law firm so my clients in Houston, Harris County, and the surrounding areas can reach me easily, no matter their schedule or transportation limitations. Most cases can be handled through video meetings, phone calls, and secure online communication. If you prefer an in-person meeting, I’m happy to accommodate that by request. My goal is to remove barriers, not create them, and being a remote practice allows me to stay accessible while giving each client the individualized attention they deserve.

  • 2. What makes your law firm different from other criminal and juvenile defense attorneys?

I intentionally keep my caseload small so I can dedicate real time and meaningful attention to each person who trusts me with their future. With 25 years in the courts, including my past role as a prosecutor, I understand exactly how the system works from both sides of the aisle. I’ve represented countless adults and juveniles facing everything from misdemeanor theft to Capital Murder, and I’ve also been appointed to work in specialty courts like STAR Court and RIC Court because of my background in substance-related cases and rehabilitation support. Clients come to me when they want a lawyer who listens, who cares, and who shows up prepared, every single time.

  • 3. Do you handle juvenile cases differently from adult criminal cases?

Yes, and that’s one of the reasons families seek me out. Juvenile law isn’t just “criminal law for kids.” It requires patience, empathy, and a deep understanding of adolescent development, competency issues, and the trauma many young people carry. I’ve been selected to work with juveniles with mental illness, juveniles in CPS custody, and children who have survived trafficking. When a young person’s future is at stake, I take that responsibility seriously. My approach is hands-on, compassionate, and built around protecting both their rights and their long-term potential.

  • 4. Can you help if CPS is trying to remove my child or terminate my parental rights? How do I know if I really need an attorney?

Yes, I have represented parents in Texas Department of Protective Services cases for years, including high-stakes litigation where termination of parental rights is on the table. These cases move fast, and parents often feel overwhelmed. I step in to help you understand what the court expects, what your rights are, and what steps you need to take to protect your family. I’ve written hundreds of appeals, so I know how to spot errors, build strong arguments, and fight for parents who feel unheard or misunderstood.

  • 5. Why should I trust you with my case?

Because I’ve spent more than two decades earning the trust of clients, judges, and the legal community across Houston and Harris County. I’m a former prosecutor, former adjunct professor at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and a longtime member of both the Houston Bar Association and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. I was even invited to present for the Fort Bend County Bar Association on the “Ethics of Dealing with Difficult Clients,” which reflects how seriously I take professionalism and client relationships. When you hire me, you’re not just getting a lawyer—you’re getting someone who will advocate for you as if you were family.

Why Us?

At my firm, you’re not just another case file, you’re a person whose story, rights, and future matter. With over 25 years of courtroom experience, I bring the insight of a former prosecutor and the dedication of an attorney who genuinely cares. I intentionally keep my practice small so I can focus fully on each client, providing personalized guidance and strategic advocacy every step of the way. Whether you’re facing criminal charges, family law issues, or a juvenile matter, I fight tirelessly to protect your rights and help you move forward with confidence.
